How to find Printer 64bit Drivers and Install in Windows 7

Need to Install your Printer on New Windows 7 Computer, but Don't Know How?

When you change computers, more often than not, the version of Operating System installed on your new computer will be a later version than was installed on your previous computer.  Such as nowadays most computers will come with Windows 7, whereas your old computer may have Windows XP, or Vista.  So, when it comes to installing your existing printer on your new computer, you need to be mindful of what Operating System you have installed, and ensure you install the correct printer software (also called driver) accordingly.  And to further complicate matters, nowadays, Operating Systems can come in 32 Bit and 64 Bit versions.  And you need to be aware of this when choosing a printer driver to install.

In this tutorial we are using the Windows 7 64 Bit operating system,  and all screen prints in this example have been taken using a Windows 7 computer, and the browser used is Internet Explorer.  The process is identical if your operating system is Windows 7 32 Bit, until you get to Step 6, where instead of selecting Windows 7 (x64), you would select Windows 7.

First you need to know if your Windows 7 Operating System is 32 Bit or 64 Bit?

Simply 'right click' on the 'Computer' Icon on your Desktop, and from the menu, select 'Properties', this will open a new window, which will show you lots of information about your computer, including the version of Operating System, and whether it is 32 Bit or 64 Bit.  You can see from the example below (note the red arrow) that this operating system is Windows 7, and is 64 Bit.

Next you will need to Locate and Download the correct Printer Driver

In our example below we will show you how to locate drivers for a Canon printer, however each of the Printer Manufacturers such as Epson, HP and Lexmark all have Printer Drivers available for download on their websites, and the steps to download will be very similar to what we show you here.

To find your printer software, you must browse to your printer manufacturer website's support/driver section. In this example as mentioned we will be using Canon.

1. Open your internet browser and navigate to
2. Once you are on the Canon website, move your cursor above the ‘Support & Services' tab, it will bring up a drop-down menu with several options, click ‘Driver Downloads'.

3. Once you are on the website in the drivers section, open up the drop down menu next to ‘Category' and select printers.

4. Choose your type of printer under ‘Sub-Category' and the model of your printer using the ‘Model' menu.

5. Once you have chosen the Category, Sub-Category and Model, click ‘Download the latest drivers and software from our support site'.

6. Once you have clicked ‘Download the latest drivers and software from our support site', select ‘Windows 7 (x64)'.

7. After you have clicked Windows 7 (x64), it will take you to a page looking similar to the below screenshot. Click the driver that is there.

8. Once you have clicked this, scroll down the page until you see ‘Download'. There will be a little check box to the left of ‘I have read and understood the information above, and wish to download the designated software'. Tick it, then click download.

Now you have located and downloaded your Printer Driver, the next few steps will lead you through the Installation:

9. As soon as you click download, a box will pop up asking you to Save or Run the file, click save and save to a location of your choice.

10. Make sure your printer is off and disconnected from your PC or laptop

11. Navigate to the location where you have saved the printer driver installation file and double click it.

12. When the setup file is open, read every page and follow the instructions, when prompted to plug in your printer, connect it to your computer and turn it on. Do not connect it to your computer until you have been asked to by the installation program. If you have gone through the installation file correctly, your printer will now be working.
